SMS "Street by 50" cans… copped for the low-low.
'SMS' is an audio tech brand with solid product and a global reach, but relatively obscure until they partnered with a notable celebrity in the music space, following the trend set most successfully by audio giant 'Monster'. 'SMS' partnered with '50-Cent' (Curtis Jackson) to produce the "by 50" line of headphones and ear-buds.
I found this pair of the SMS "Street" at—of all places—a shoe store. 'Finish Line' is more known for kicks, but that inevitably bleeds into lifestyle products now. These are definitely lifestyle products with enough technical specs to be legit, but the hefty initial retail price-tag (around $250) put them in a range owned far more convincingly by the "Bose" & "Beats" brands. Add to that their placement in a shoe retailer and we have an ill-fitting accessory. Bad for them—great for me. Why? Having been on shelves for a long cycle, the clearance price got a clearance price and dropped through the floor to $80. As if 70% off wasn't good enough, the lesson here: coupons aren't just for soccer moms, yo—with a $20 off reward coupon, I found the limited-edition magenta pair (yes, on purpose!) for $60. The look is very clean, with sturdy poly-construction and smooth, seamless lines. The sound it clean and balanced, good bass, that gets better with use and so far hasn't gotten muddy. They don't travel well, as they are large and don't fold. The "passive" noise-canceling is kind of a joke because the memory foam—while comfy—doesn't block much. But on the real, these are big enough to handle the original meaning of noise-canceling… just be louder than all of the other noise! Boom.
