ASICS Kayano "20th Anniversary Pack" highlights this legendary trainer.
It's been said that design is the marriage between art & science. Nothing could be more true when observing and appreciating performance footwear. The ASICS brand has long been synonymous with high performance running and training footwear. Their branding alone can be seen as one of the most authentic and consistent to their pedigree, as their very name is an acronym—A.S.I.C.S. In Latin, "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano" means "A sound mind in a sound body." Their name itself is both an ideal and a call to action.
The "Kayano" trainer—named for it's design father, Toshikazu Kayano—is one of the most constant, highly-ranked shoes in the running market since its 1993 birthdate, reached its 20th iteration last year. To celebrate this milestone, a special pack was put together, paring the very first Kayano with the 20th. The pack was hard to get my hands on because to further commemorate the journey and attach meaning to the story, only 1993 packs were made and numbered for exclusivity. My pair is proudly number #1228 of 1993.
Shockingly, or perhaps not so to the fans of this line, no. 1 is as comfortable as no. 20, and I'd dare say it would perform as well or better than 90% of the current running models on the market today. Talk about "sound" mind & body. The design remains as unique from 1 as it is through 20, but in each outlandishly stylish stroke there had to be innovation. Form followed pure function and style suffered none for it in the end. Obviously a stroke of lasting brilliance.
